The Union Public Service Commission has released the UPSC ESE eligibility criteria 2025 in the official notification. The eligibility criteria of UPSC ESE 2025 comprise age limit, educational qualification, Nationality and other conditions. The age limit to apply for the UPSC ESE 2026 exam is 21 to 30 years. UPSC ESE Salary - Probation Period

UPSC ESE Salary - Career Growth & Promotion
Unlike many other jobs, the IES officers climb the ladder of hierarchy with experience. The following are the various posts which will be offered to the IES officers with experience. The officers will be initially inducted as an Assistant Executive Engineer and can end up being Chairperson or the Cabinet-level officer.
- The candidate will be selected as an Assistant Executive Engineer or Assistant Director.
- After an experience of 3 to 4 years, the candidate will be promoted to Executive Engineer or Director.
- After 13 years of experience, the candidate will be appointed as a Joint General Manager or Chief Engineer of level 2.
- After 20 years of experience, the candidate will be promoted to the post of Additional General Manager or Chief Engineer.
- After 30 years of experience, the candidate will become a Senior General Manager.
- The final promotion will come after gaining experience of 34 years when the candidate will become a Managing Director or Chairperson of the governmental organization.

UPSC ESE Prelims Exam Pattern 2026

The prelims exam will consist of two papers, namely General Studies & Engineering Aptitude, and a paper based on the engineering discipline. Both papers of the UPSC ESE prelims exam will have objective-type questions. Both papers of the prelims exam will be conducted in offline pen and paper mode. Paper 1 consists of 100 questions, and the total marks will be 200. Paper 2 of the UPSC ESE prelims exam consists of 150 questions, and the total marks will be 300. Candidates securing minimum cut-off marks as decided by the Commission will be called for the Personality test. The number of candidates called for the Personality Test will be about twice the number of vacancies to be filled under this recruitment.
