According to UGC NET June 2025 Exam Pattern, the UGC NET Written Exam is a Computer Based Test comprising objective-type questions. - The Paper I will test the candidates on areas such as teaching and research aptitude. It will consist of topics like reasoning ability, comprehension, general awareness, and divergent thinking.
- Paper-II will be based on the subject selected by the candidate (like Political Science, Philosophy, History, Commerce, Music, etc.).
- Paper I, where it includes 50 questions for 100 marks.
- Paper II will have 100 questions for 200 marks.
- Each correct answer will fetch 2 marks. There will be no negative marking.

The UGC NET Paper 1 carries 100 marks. It has 50 questions of 2 marks each. The questions is this section will be conceptual and appplication based. These questions intend to assess the candidate's knowledge of teaching/research aptitude. UGC NET Exam Pattern for Paper 2
NTA in its latest notification on UGC NET Paper 2 exam has stated that this paper will depend on the subject that an individual chooses out of the 85 available subjects while filling out the UGC NET examination. Also the Candidates can only appear in their Post-Graduation subject for Paper 2 of UGC NET exam In case, their subject of Post graduation is not included in the list of 82 subjects, they can choose a comparable subject.
However, for any subject, people choose, the exam pattern will be the same for all subjects. There will be 100 questions for 200 marks. The candidates have to be very well read and through with their subjects as it will test their subject knowledge mainly. The paper will be objective type. Below is an overview of the NTA UGC NET paper pattern for the same.
- Each question will carry 2 marks.
- Paper-II will have a duration of 2 hours.
- No negative marking will be given for wrong answers in Paper-II

Candidates aiming to become an Assistant Professor, a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) or planning to pursue a Ph.D. should first understand the syllabus to prepare effectively for the exam . The detailed syllabus for both the papers is provided below.
UGC NET Paper 1 Syllabus (General Paper)
The UGC NET Paper I Syllabus is common for all the candidates as it is necessary to appear in Paper I. Each topic tests a candidate’s critical thinking, analytical skills & general awareness. There will be 50 questions of 100 marks in the exam. UGC NET paper 1 syllabus is compulsory for all. Check the syllabus of all 10 units below.
Unit 1. Teaching Aptitude : Concept and Objectives of Teaching, Levels of Teaching (Memory, Understanding, and Reflective), Learner Characteristics (Adolescents & Adults), Teaching Methods (Teacher-Centred vs Learner-Centred, Online & Offline Methods), Evaluation Systems (Types of Evaluation, Credit-Based System, Computer-Based Testing).
Unit 2. Research Aptitude : Meaning, Types, and Characteristics of Research, Methods of Research (Experimental, Descriptive, Historical, Qualitative, Quantitative), Thesis and Article Writing (Formats and Referencing Styles), Research Ethics & ICT in Research.
Unit 3. Comprehension: Reading a passage and answering MCQs based on it.
