Building fault-tolerant event-driven microservices requires deliberate architectural decisions regarding message acknowledgment, transactional outbox patterns, and consumer rebalancing. In this comprehensive blueprint, we walk through building a resilient payment and order fulfillment pipeline.
The Transactional Outbox Pattern
Dual-write operations (updating a local SQL database and dispatching a message to Kafka) are inherently susceptible to partial failures. By writing the event into an internal outbox_events table within the same database transaction, a dedicated CDC worker (e.g. Debezium or Spring Scheduled poller) guarantees zero message loss.
Dead Letter Queues (DLQ) & Exponential Retries
Never let corrupted or malformed payloads block entire partition consumers. We implement spring-kafka DefaultErrorHandler with 3 exponential backoff retries before dead-lettering messages to a separate orders.dlq topic for operator inspection.
